Summer Rituals

In puttering around the internet this afternoon, I came across this truly beautiful NYTimes slideshow of the racehorses in Saratoga Springs. The accompanying article is all about the summer traditions surrounding the horse race and how it contributes to the community and lore of Saratoga. As some of you may know, I grew up riding horses, and I've also spent a few summers in Saratoga, attending "summer camp" (writing classes via CTY at Skidmore). It sounds strange, but Saratoga is the greenest place I have ever seen. Plus, they have an astounding variety of lawn jockeys, which actually isn't at all surprising. In looking at the photos, I had an intense and visceral rememberance of what it is to be around horses all the time - the smells, the experience of rinsing off a horse and seeing the steam rise off them, and just feeling this hugely powerful and yet trusting animal move beneath you. It's truly an experience that stays with me, and it doesn't take much to bring me back to that place. Anyway, just thought I'd share.
Plus, I'm starting to do more and more real Publicity work these days. I'm in a new cubicle (!) near a window, so I see the sun and hear the mayhem below. In addition to a lot of the mailing and travel booking that I've been doing, I'm starting to pitch over the phone, schedule events, and talk to reporters and book reviewers. It really feels great when you can tangibly see yourself gaining responsibility (even if this is only my third week). I still get so happy when I realize I'm a member of a team, valued and not replacable the way a temp worker would be.
So, my week ends about now (Summer Fridays = fringe benefit), and I'm off. We'll see how my 9-5 writing schedule goes this weekend. I think I'll spend it in the Park - lots of opportunity for observation. We'll see on Monday!

  1. totally know what you mean about the horse smells -- i get so nostalgic when i walk in central park and smell the horses that carry people around on that cart (though the horse lover in me can't stand the cruelty of seeing them stand in the hot sun all day with all that gear) so glad you're having such a great time at your job, keep up the good work (and the blog! love reading!)
